Favor a grounding and warming vata pacifying diet. Cooking with spices like ginger, cumin and cinnamon, and herbs such as basil, rosemary and oregano also add needed nutrients. Avoid strong flavors, and eat fewer bitter, pungent and astringent foods. Include good fats, especially ghee and good olive oil.

Healthy Gut and Strong Digestion
A healthy gut and a strong digestion (agni) are essential to adequately absorb and assimilate the nutrients needed while not adding to toxic load (ama). Digestion can be strengthened by eating only when hungry, thoroughly chewing food, drinking very little liquids during meals, being mindful while eating and not eating when upset. Adding a little bit of fermented foods daily will also support a healthy gut.

Lifestyle Tips
Your body can either be in a state of stress or in a state of healing. Chronic stress uses more resources than the body can supply leading to situations such as bone loss. Managing stress is one of the most important ways to strengthen bones. Making meditation and mindfulness a part of your daily life is crucial to your health. 10-20 minutes of meditation twice a day is a good place to start.
Exercise will not only reduce stress, but is essential for building and maintaining bone. Find types that you enjoy so you are more likely to include it into your daily life. Perhaps a walk in the morning and yoga in the afternoon may work for you. Weight bearing exercise is important (such as walking uphill) to challenge the bones to grow stronger. Aim for at least thirty minutes of exercise a day.

Oil Massage
Oil Massage (abhyanga) has many benefits, most of all for soothing vata, reducing stress and nourishing your entire system. It is best to give yourself an oil massage at least once a week but daily is even better for you. dandelion leaves, peas, sprouts, spinach and lettuce, reducing heavy or watery vegetables such as sweet potatoes, cucumbers and zucchini. Favor light fruit such as blueberries, apples and pears, reducing heavy and sour fruits such as oranges, bananas, dates, coconut and melon. Beans are good, and emphasize barley, buckwheat, rye, corn and millet. If you are a non-vegetarian, choose white meat and freshwater fish. The Indian dish kitchari is a wonderful food to eat at this time. Adding warming and slightly heating spices such as tumeric, ginger, cinnamon, cardamon, pepper, thyme, rosemary, basil and sage are also beneficial as these all help with your digestion. Having a strong digestion is the root of good health.

Continue to minimize or eliminate foods that are heavy, oily, cold, sweet, salty and sour such as oil, meat, wheat, nuts, sweeteners, and dairy. Also ditch leftover and frozen foods.

A wonderful cleansing tea is to mix equal parts cumin, coriander and fennel seeds and use a teaspoon of the seeds for a mug of boiling water. Let the seeds steep for 3-5 minutes and enjoy. You can make enough in the morning to fill a thermos and sip this tea throughout the day. Other teas made of ginger, cinnamon, cardamon, tumeric, lemon and holy basil are also good.

You might add a small amount of local honey to your warm tea (never add honey to hot) to help desensitize yourself to the local pollens.

Use a Neti Pot
A Neti Pot is a highly effective way to cleanse out molds and pollens before they have a chance to irritate your mucous membranes. A Neti Pot is like a little tea pot that you fill with warm, distilled water and a little pinch of non-iodized salt and then you use this to irrigate your sinus passages. It’s handy to use it twice a day right after you have brushed your teeth or come in from being outdoors. You can find directions for using the neti pot here.

Nasya
Applying a little oil to your nasal passages coats and soothes the nasal tissues preventing pollens from ever coming into contact with them to begin with. You may use a special naysa oil or simply put a little sesame oil or ghee on your clean pinky and lightly rub the inside of your nose.

Do Nasya at least an hour after doing neti. A good time is right at bedtime and right when you wake up.

Keeping your windows closed, changing your clothes and taking a shower right after coming inside will help keep pollen at bay.

Meditate
Meditation is one of the most important things you can do for your health as it will lower stress which in turn will strengthen your immunity. Don’t worry about which type of meditation to do; keep experimenting until you find something that helps you. So what is One to do?

Hands down, practice meditation. Practicing meditation brings you to the place where you can relax and enjoy your day moment by moment, no matter what is swirling around you. Your body and mind are constantly giving you clues about what is right and what is out of sorts and what to do to regain equilibrium. The more you practice meditation, the more it gives back: the more you are able to listen to the clues your body is always telling you. Are you ready to feel more healthy, happy and relaxed?

So, how to begin? There are innumerable techniques for meditation, but I find it best to begin with the simplest. So just for today, set aside a few moments to sit quietly and begin by paying attention to your breath. If you are in a space where you can do so, you might find it helpful to close your eyes.

First, just take a long breathe in. Go ahead and really feel your lungs fill and your abdomen expand. Then make a nice sigh and breathe out nice and long. As you breathe in focus on your breath as it enters your body. Let your mind rest on the breath. Thoughts will come and go and try to get you to leave and pull you away from the present moment. As soon as you notice your mind is wandering, see those thoughts dissolve and move your attention back to your breath.

The breath brings us energy. As we pay attention to our breath, we can learn where we are comfortable in our body or mind, and where we are stuck. You can even bring your breath to areas that seem stagnant and uncomfortable, and soon you will experience them releasing and flowing smoothly again.

You can stay in meditation as along as you like. When you are ready, gradually look at your surroundings while you maintain your sense of balance. Make no judgments about your practice. There are no failures; just practice. You will find that the more you practice this simple meditation, the easier it is to stay centered and balanced no matter what you are exposed to during your day. The more centered you are, the more content you will be. The more content you are, the healthier you will be.

It is beneficial to set aside the same time or times of the day to practice your meditation and make it routine. Soon you will look forward to your time here and will thrive on it.

So let’s begin! There is no time like the present.

In Gratitude,
Shivani

Taming Anxiety Technique One

http://www.balancedlifeayurveda.com/balancedlifeayurvedacom/taming-anxiety-technique-one

http://www.balancedlifeayurveda.com/balancedlifeayurvedacom/taming-anxiety-technique-one#comments

Self Care Advice

2020 has certainly been a crazy year full of uncertainties. As a result, more of us are experiencing symptoms of anxiety including worry, tension, nervousness, fatigue, trouble focusing, obsessing, confusion, digestive issues, and insomnia. Certainly none of these things are comfortable. What is more concerning is if these symptoms continue unabated they may manifest into conditions more serious and chronic. So I’d like to share some techniques and habits that can help calm anxiety and help return you to center.

Today I would like you to think about how you breathe as the breath has an enormous effect on both the body and the mind. I’d like you to start by simply observing your breath during different times of the day If you are feeling anxious, your breath will tend to be more rapid and shallow. This is your body telling your mind that you are in danger and your mind telling your body to be ready to spring into action. Generally we do not need to fight off a tiger, but we might feel like our lives are threatened anyway. Today, we will focus on a simple technique that will help bring a sense of calmness and stability in a short period of time and with little effort.

Sit comfortably and simply observe your breath. You’ll notice that just by bringing your attention to the breath, it will slow down automatically and you will feel calmer.

Now, go ahead and put one hand on your belly and the other on your chest. Observe if the hand on your belly is moving in and out more or if the hand on your chest is. We want to eventually have the hand on your belly doing the expanding. At the beginning, just notice.

The next step is to keep your mind focused on the breath. Maybe visualize riding your breath as it comes in and as it moves out. You could be a little ball of fluff following your breath in, following your breath out. Let your mind rest on this awareness. If other thoughts come, that’s OK; notice them, let them go and bring your awareness back to following the breath. Now you have added the practice of mindfulness to your breathing.

Now, let’s breathe in to the count of five and then breath out to the count of five. You can count one, two, three, four, five. Or you can introduce a phrase that lasts a count of five. I use a mantra that happens to last a count of five. But you could use anything, for instance “I am breathing in and feeling calm, I am breathing out and feeling calm”.

Now bring your awareness to your tongue and place the tip on the back of your upper front teeth. This has been practiced for thousands of years by yogis and now we know that this stimulates the vagus nerve and brings calm! Just let the tongue rest there.

Practice this breathing for perhaps 10 or 15 minutes once or twice a day. What is lovely is you can bring your awareness to your breath at any time during the day (or night) and use any of the tips I just shared with you, and you will feel calmer. You can do it whenever you think of it. You do not need to be sitting with your hands on your belly and chest. You could be in line at the grocery store that is moving more slowly than you want. Just practice the breath. The more you practice, the more powerful, and automatic this will become for you. It is wonderful when you notice that after awhile when you are in any kind of stressful situation, you find your mind focusing on the breath all on its own. Your mind and your body want to be in balance.

So if you are feeling anxious, go ahead and focus on your breathing. If you are not feeling anxious, go ahead and focus on your breathing, too! Actually, the more you practice this breathing technique when you are feeling calm already, the less likely you will be to feel anxious, and the more effective it will be if you end up in the throes of anxiety.

So start with this one simple practice and see how it works for you.

I’ll be back with more techniques for you to add to your life to feel better, happier and even joyful

In the meantime, Namaste.

Staying Calm within the COVID-19 Storm

http://www.balancedlifeayurveda.com/balancedlifeayurvedacom/staying-calm-within-the-covid-19-storm

http://www.balancedlifeayurveda.com/balancedlifeayurvedacom/staying-calm-within-the-covid-19-storm#comments

Self Care Advice

During this most difficult time stress, anxiety and fear may be increasing within ourselves and in those around us. When you notice you are stuck in a negative mind set, focus on the breath instead. Follow it in and follow it out, repeat; it’s as simple as that. Choose a word or phrase to give the mind something to rest on. I often use “breathe in calm, breathe out smile”.

“Breathing in, I calm my body. Breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in the present moment, I know this is a wonderful moment.” -From ‘Being Peace’, by Thich Nhat Hanh.

-Smile, even if you don’t feel like it. If your body smiles, it calms the mind. Try it right now. Better yet, smile at someone else.

-Your diet is of utmost importance. Bad food choices create toxins, and toxins give a virus a place to grow in. Avoid any food that is heavy and difficult to digest -including any kind of sugar and processed foods, milk and cheese, and heavier meats. Pizza is not your friend.

-Eat light, easy to digest foods such as vegetable soups and broths. Kitchari is very cleansing. Drink a lot of hot teas such as ginger and lemon, chai (without caffeine) and tulsi. A tea made with equal parts cumin, coriander and fennel seeds is also excellent, especially if you add a bit of chopped ginger to it. If you do not have anything to make a tea, even sipping hot water is good.

-Eat mindfully and focus on your food. Chew your food a lot to help with your digestion. Eat less than you think you need. Allow at least five hours between meals.

-Limit your screen time. You won’t find any answers by surfing for hours or watching the news continuously. Use the time to do something positive, something you enjoy, to lift your spirits.

-Excercise, consistently, but gently. Walk, stretch, dance, yoga; whatever feels good.

-Go to bed before 10 p.m. and get up with the sun. If you are not used to doing this, it may seem tough, but after a week or two you’ll notice you are resting more and it becomes easier.

-Come from a place of love rather than a place of fear you will benefit not only yourself but all those that you come in contact with.

Remember, you are not your body, you are not your mind; you are Pure Awareness.

Sending you love and light and well-being,
Shivani

Why Ayurveda Prefers Oil over Lotion

http://www.balancedlifeayurveda.com/balancedlifeayurvedacom/why-ayurveda-prefers-oil-over-lotion

http://www.balancedlifeayurveda.com/balancedlifeayurvedacom/why-ayurveda-prefers-oil-over-lotion#comments

Self Care Advice

An Ayurvedic Perspective One of the best ways to have great skin health is to simply keep your skin moisturized. Overall, the intense heat of summer drains the energy in everyone.

Summer Tips for Everyone.

When it heats up outside, we might start feeling angry, irritable, aggressive, impatient, critical, frustrated, competitive, and have trouble falling asleep. We might develop skin rashes, acne, sunburn, lots of sweating, weaker digestion, heartburn, hyper-acidity, ulcers, loose stools, stinky body odor, excessive thirst, and inflammation. If we ignore simple symptoms, heat can go on to manifest in more serious and harmful conditions such as ulcers, gastritis, liver disorders and heart disease..

Fortunately, what we do in our day to day routine and what we choose to eat can have an enormous impact on how we feel. If you know you are predominantly pitta or already have a pitta imbalance, you’ll want to give more care to your choices in the heat of summer as you are more prone to get hotter, faster.

Simply remembering that opposites decrease and like increases like will help keep you in balance in the summer. You’ll benefit by adding things with the qualities of cool, dry, gentle, heavy and sweet smelling in everything you do - from what you eat and drink to even considering what colors you wear, what you smell and your routine.
These suggestions are if you are in balance or are dominantly pitta or have a pitta imbalance. In the summer when it is hot and humid, we naturally desire less food and favor things that are cool and light, as well as a more carefree routine. In the winter, we are drawn to heavier and heartier foods as well as to more sleep and introspection. In the spring, we eat the young sprouts and greens that come up and enjoy more movement.

However as most of us in the western world live in in a more artificial environment, we have lost some of our ability to “listen” to what we need to stay healthy. With Ayurveda, we can relearn what is best as we listen to our inner self once again. As Ayurveda focuses on preventing disease, supporting balance in our body and mind throughout the year by making daily and seasonal adjustments to the cycles of nature, will keep us healthy and content.

As each of us has a unique constitution, there is no one way to approach how to handle the seasonal changes. For instance, someone who is predominantly a fiery pitta will enjoy the coolness of winter, whereas someone with predominantly kapha will feel the effects of the cold more dearly. A well balanced individual can follow the seasons per se - using a cooling and dryer pitta routine in the summer, a warmer and grounding vata routine in fall and a light and dry kapha reducing routine in the spring. However, someone who is out of balance or has a very dominant dosha, must soothe that dosha all year round.

In India, Ayurveda divides the year into six distinct seasons. In the United States, we have either three or four, depending on where we live. Generally, the wetness and growth of late winter into spring increases kapha, the heat and intensity of summer increases pitta, and the windiness and dryness of fall increases vata. But summer in Maine is completely different than summer in Arizona. So rather than follow a calendar we need to pay attention to the qualities of the season, even the qualities of each day within the season, the time of day and the time of our lives, as well as to our own state of balance or imbalance. Although this might seem overwhelming at first, by becoming in touch with our inner wisdom we can create powerful changes to our health.

Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall
Whatever is your predominant dosha must be given special care during the season that dosha governs. So if you are more Kapha or have a kapha imbalance, Spring can be more challenging for you as spring has many of the same qualities of Kapha - cool, wet, heavy and anabolic. The summer is more challenging for Pitta with more heat, light and intensity, and the fall for vata as it is light, dry, changeable, and catabolic. A cold rainy day in the middle of the summer when you are challenged with a head cold should be approached differently than on a blazing hot day.

Don’t worry if this seems complicated; it really is simple once you understand the qualities of the elements and the doshas. For now, the basic thing to remember is that like increases like and opposites decrease. So if you are hot and cranky, apply more things that are cooling and calming. A cool stroll in the moonlight, wearing lovely light cotton clothes along a lake shore will do wonders. If you have a mucousy cold - wet, heavy and stagnant, increase things that are warm, dry and mobile. A nice cup of hot ginger tea will make you crankier if you are hot and fiery but will help break up the mucous of a cold.

Knowing the diet and lifestyle that helps pacify each dosha during each season will help you maintain balance and prevent disease. You'll feel better and stay healthier.
During a consultation, we can decide what is best just for you.

In the meantime, be well and smile often,
Shivani

The Bliss of Chocolate

http://www.balancedlifeayurveda.com/balancedlifeayurvedacom/the-bliss-of-chocolate

http://www.balancedlifeayurveda.com/balancedlifeayurvedacom/the-bliss-of-chocolate#comments

Recipes

Self Care Advice

Ah, chocolate! It contains chemical compounds that increase our ability to focus and improves our memory, and it contains anandamide, the “bliss molecule,” which helps us to feel good, longer. It also contains phenylethylamine, “the love molecule,” which raise the level of endorphins in our brain, very similar to the chemical changes that make us feel on top of the world when we are falling in love.3

“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt.” ―Charles M. Unfortunately, the typical chocolate bar or commercial hot cocoa mix has been highly processed, heated, alkalized, and contains sugars, preservatives, artificial flavors, and other undesirable additives. Usually, white sugar or corn syrup are the main ingredient, and both have a bad rap for very good reasons. Comparing organic raw cacao and most commercial chocolate is like comparing a perfectly ripe, fresh, organic, wild blueberry with the synthetic chemical blueberry flavoring in a jelly bean. The processing and the toxic additives are not digestible and are lacking in prana, aggravate all three doshas, builds ama, and contributes to disease. But don’t despair. With a little education, you can learn how to use this wonderful food to your benefit.

How to Choose the Best Chocolate for Health and Healing

Ayurveda teaches us to pay attention to the qualities of the food we eat, that anything can be medicine or a poison depending on how it is used or who is using it. When I talk about pure chocolate, I am referring to raw cacao. Raw cacao has a very bitter taste (rasa), a pungent aftertaste (vipaka), is light and dry, and has a heating energy (virya). It is rajasic as it stimulates the mind and can be difficult to digest.

So, is it good for you? It depends on many things. Are you in balance and do you have a strong digestion? Do you have a dominance of vata, pitta, or kapha or an imbalance of one, two, or all three?

If you are balanced and happily healthy, think of chocolate as a spice. A little goes a long way. If you are out of balance, it is advisable not to consume chocolate or even raw cacao powder very often. If you are craving chocolate, try to discern if you are you craving the bitter taste or the sweet taste. The sweet taste associated with chocolate is not the cacao, but the added sugars. You might consider eating something naturally sweet, like a date or piece of fruit instead.

When I was taking my oral exam in Ayurveda school, my teacher asked me to describe the qualities of chocolate. I explained that the bitterness increased vata but would decrease kapha. However, as chocolate (raw cacao) is usually combined with sugar, it would increase kapha and decrease vata and pitta. And as it contains a little caffeine it would increase both pitta and vata. Chocolate is rajasic, or stimulating, which would increase vata and pitta and decrease kapha. He paused, smiled sweetly, and then explained the prabhava of chocolate was magical, so therefore could be enjoyed by all.

“Look, there’s no metaphysics on earth like chocolate.” —Fernando Pessoa

Chocolate And The Doshas

In balance, kapha can benefit the most from cacao. The bitter and heating qualities are the opposite to kapha’s heavy and cool qualities. But this doesn’t mean that kaphas can run out and buy a boatload of chocolate. Someone who is balanced can consume small quantities, like a square of very dark chocolate once or twice a week.

If you are pitta, the heating and stimulating qualities of cacao can throw more heat on the fire. Caffeine increases the heat of pitta, which may contribute to pitta imbalances like heartburn, acne, and irritability.

And for those with more vata, well, sadly, chocolate is the least beneficial, as the light and dry aspects of cacao match the light and dryness of vata. And the caffeine in cacao will contribute to nervousness and anxiety. If you are vata and choose to eat chocolate, be sure to eat some with natural sweeteners in it. The heaviness of the sweetness will help balance the lightness of the cacao. Again, take it in very small amounts.

How to Choose Chocolate

For the greatest health benefits, buy chocolate that is certified as fair-trade and organic. Non-organic chocolate is heavily treated with toxic pesticides and fungicides which are big no-no’s for vibrant health. Seek out fair-trade, which ensures that farmers are paid a fair and stable price for their labors, and sustainably sourced ensures that both farmers and land have been treated with respect.

The most medicinal chocolate will be organic, raw, unprocessed cacao nibs. These are very powerful and very bitter. However, this is not always preferable for everyone. If you do not like the idea of chewing on a little bit of raw cacao nibs, look for chocolate that is above 70 percent concentration of dark chocolate. The higher the concentration, the more bitter, and the more nutritional value and healing effects it will have. But because of the bitterness of raw cacao or intense dark chocolate, consuming it with a meal and all its tastes will be more balancing. Remember that chocolate is a stimulant, and best eaten in moderation. Pay attention to how it makes you feel and that will help you decide when and if to eat it.

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” —Hippocrates

How to Make Your Own Special Chocolate

By making your own chocolate, you have more control of the quality and can choose what to add to it to make it more balancing for you.
Ingredients:

½–1 cup raw, organic cacao powder. The mixture should be thick enough that you can form it into a ball. Roll the balls either in more cacao powder, unsweetened shredded coconut, or sesame seeds. Store in the refrigerator.

Best Stir-Ins for Each Dosha
Vata would benefit from adding a bit of shredded coconut, chopped almonds, sesame seeds, grated orange peel, cardamom powder, or mineral salt. The best sweeteners would be honey, molasses, or barley malt.

Pitta may want to add shredded coconut, sunflower seeds, chopped dates, mint, or vanilla extract, and use maple syrup, date sugar, or stevia as the sweetener.

Kapha could add chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, ginger, cinnamon, clove, or nutmeg. Honey or stevia is the best sweetener.

Enjoy your chocolate in sacred little bites. Focus on its healing benefits and give it your full attention when imbibing.
